The Churdan Public Library turned the clock back 153 years on Sunday, April 13, to learn about the Civil War. There were 22 stops along the “underground railroad” which featured many facts and myths about the Civil War.
The first stop along the trail was getting assigned a name of a soldier of either the Union or Confederate army. At the conclusion of the meal everyone learned the fate of their soldier. Volunteers helping with the event were given names of slaves and also learned their fate at the conclusion of the evening.
Some of the activities included toys of the era, the history of the fan and how it was used to communicate, and even weapons that would have been used during the war, including a sword and cannon balls.
A meal that a soldier might request before heading off to the battlefield was served to more than 80 soldiers and slaves.
